How Does Your House Look So Clean?

Aug 22, 2023 | Cleaning Tips

Most of us have a friend or family member whose house is always impressively clean. How do they do it? We have some ideas.

  1. They avoid clutter. Yes, a house can be full of things and still very clean. But realistically, the less clutter the better. Extra items, especially those without a place (A place for everything, and everything in its place!), quickly fill counters and the floor of your closet (and your office and your playroom…), gathering dirt and creating a feeling of disorganization and chaos. Think twice before bringing new things in your home, or plan to give something away when you bring something else in.
  2. They equip their home with the cleaning supplies they need (and not what they don’t). Invest in a vacuum that works well. Keep a broom accessible for a quick sweep. Keep cleaning cloths and products in each bathroom, as well as the kitchen, making it easy to wipe over surfaces. Remember: more supplies isn’t always better, and may actually be worse. Many all-in-one products offer bang for your buck, and baking soda, vinegar, and hot water all have just as much cleaning power as some of their more expensive – and less green – alternatives.
  3. They have a cleaning plan. Don’t let it get to the point where you’re overwhelmed (and grossed out). Make a plan of action to ensure dust, dirt, and clutter don’t build up. Make time into your weekly schedule to vacuum, mop, do laundry and complete other cleaning tasks, breaking down tasks so you’re not trying to clean everything on the same day (or right before the company arrives).
  4. They clean and declutter as they go. When you finish a project or activity, return items to their proper place. Sweep or vacuum the kitchen floor after each meal. Don’t let mail and other paperwork build up on the counters. Fold a load of laundry as it’s finished, instead of making piles of clean laundry on your couch or bed. And please – don’t leave dirty dishes in the sink overnight! We realize there will be days when some of these things simply don’t happen, and that’s ok. But each time you make the effort, your house stays a little cleaner, a little less cluttered, and a lot more pleasant to live in.
  5. They don’t do it all themselves. Involve your spouse, your roommate, and/or your children. It’s tempting to assume you have to do it yourself to do it right, but that’s both unreasonable and incorrect. Ask your friends or do some research to determine age-appropriate cleaning tasks for even the youngest members of your household. When possible, divide tasks among adults and teens by preference (You don’t mind the vacuum and they don’t mind folding, for example.) If no one is clamoring to clean the kitchen or bathrooms, make a rotating schedule. Everyone can contribute to a clean house!

And let’s be honest, sometimes your friend’s house is clean because they have help. Hiring a house cleaning service can save you time, energy, and stress. Whether you choose a weekly house cleaner or bring in a professional to help with specific deep cleaning tasks, don’t be afraid to outsource some of your cleaning responsibilities.
